“Time On His Hands With Nothing To Do”

“Idleness is the enemy of the soul.”

St. Benedict

Have I ever gotten into unseen trouble when I had time on my hands with nothing to do?

“To have too much to do is for most (people) safer than to have too little.”

Henry E. Manning

“It is what you do when you have nothing to do that reveals what you are.” Anonymous

“One evening David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house.”

II Samuel 11: 2

Amplified Bible

When I was young, I spent the hot summer months at my grandparents ranch in Arizona. While there was time for horseback riding and swimming in the creek, much of the day was spent working in the garden and then canning and preserving the fruits of our labors. Believe me, it was hard work. For a young girl, eager to relax and have fun, standing over hot pots in the kitchen wasn’t exactly my idea of a life of ease.

One day, I began to grumble to my grandmother about all the work. Now you need to remember, grandma was a person who had as her life’s motto, “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.” My grandma didn’t know what it was like not to be doing something “industrious.” She could literally make work out of relaxing. But as I mumbled under my breath about all the work, grandma gave me one of those looks that made me clearly understand I had overstepped my bounds. Then she said, “Don’t ever complain about work, Dorothy. It’s a gift from God. Remember, God put His children in Eden’s garden to “tend” it. That should tell you that there’s nothing wrong with learning to care for the gifts in our gardens.” While I didn’t really appreciate her words at the time, I certainly do now. Especially during these difficult days when so many of God’s children are facing a tough economy.

As I’ve read about the incredible determination so many individuals have shown as they search for jobs in a tight marketplace and with a depressed economy, it only makes my blood boil to hear wealthy politicians, who have extremely easy work schedules, mock those who are trying so desperately to hold their lives together with meager earnings and long work hours, sometimes even carrying the responsibility of two or three jobs at a time. I know this life for my husband’s parents struggled for many years – but through it all, their children never went hungry for idleness was not a word in their vocabulary.

Sadly, we too frequently are fed the false notion that idleness is a problem of the poorest members of society. What a misconception! If we read the Bible, we find that throughout the Scriptures, idleness was a demon that most often thwarted the lives of those with wealth. And interestingly, this is where the story of David in Jerusalem intersects with Lot in Sodom.

When we were studying about Lot and his family, I took some time to look up all the texts in the Bible that had to do with Sodom. Much to my surprise, I found one of the most informative passages in the entire Bible hidden away in the book of Ezekiel. The prophet Ezekiel was admonishing those living in Samaria, a city he called the “elder sister.” And this is what Ezekiel said, “She (Samaria) and her daughters who dwelt in the north and at your left hand; and your younger sister who dwelt in the south and at your right hand is Sodom and her daughters…Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, overabundance of food, prosperous ease, and idleness were hers and her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” (Ezekiel 16: 46-50, Amplified Bible).

It was our gracious heavenly Father who looked into the city of Sodom and found that it was during times of wealth and affluence; it was among the prideful and arrogant; and it was with those who had so much time on their hands, when problems developed. We frequently think immorality was Sodom’s downfall when in fact, it was a haughty affluence that sustained an idle life-style that allowed for the misadventures of an impure society. And the exact same thing happened to David. Living in the palace in the lap of luxury, David found himself with time on his hands and nothing to do but walk off the purposeful path God had for him and for his life.

As I read our text for today, combined with the words of Ezekiel, I thought of all the times in my life when I’ve wished for an easier life. You can’t help but be confronted with the images of those who seem to “have it all.” As these pictures hit you in the face whenever you turn on a television or pass by a magazine stand, you can start to wish for what appears to be an easy life. While the media heralds the success of those who float around in yachts or fly around in jets, living off the excess that appeals to the covetous part of our hearts and says, “I’d like that, too” isn’t God’s way. This is why God, in His infinite wisdom, has left us the detailed stories of His children – especially David, who the Bible tells us, had a heart “after God’s,” meaning he had a heart that longed to be like God. Yet, when plenty was laid before him – his free time became idle time. David fell into the very same trap that ensnared the residents of Sodom. These are the facts that serve as the setting for the story of David and Bathesheba. A story that serves as a warning that wealth that brings idle time, can lead to a purposeless life.

“Some temptations come to the industrious, but all temptations attack the idle”

C. H. Spurgeon

“‘My time’, we say.

How presumptuous!

It’s not ours:

we didn’t make it,

we can’t stop it;

no one can preserve it

We can’t hold the present moment,

it slips through our fingers.

We can’t freeze it,

or bottle it,

to await our pleasure.

We can’t even define it:

‘animal, vegetable or mineral’!

Does it exist?

If it does,

whose it it?

God, teach us to value it,

to love it,

to relax in its embrace,

and always to remember

that it’s not ours.

It’s yours.”

God’s Cleats

Rachel Olsen

“Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.”  Ecclesiastes 7:12 (NLT)

Devotion:

The Vancouver Olympics have me glued to my TV. Figure skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, even curling – I’ll watch most any Olympic sport. I relish the competition, the teamwork, the medal ceremonies, and especially the stories of athletes overcoming odds to perform well.

In fact, it reminds me a little of my husband Rick.

My husband grew up with a single mother, and very little money.  In high school, Rick wanted to try out for track and field – he dreamed of running fast and long, and throwing a javelin.  The problem was he didn’t have the right shoes, and couldn’t afford them.  Thank God for good friends and a kind coach.

One of Rick’s close friends invited Rick over to his house one day and said, “Try these running shoes on. They just don’t fit my feet right and I’ll never wear them.”  Rick wasn’t sure if J.T. was telling the truth, but the shoes fit Rick fine.  Those shoes helped him qualify for the state meet in the 800 meter race.

Running shoes allowed Rick to run much faster than his old sneakers would, but he would slip and slide in them while trying to throw the javelin. One day after practice, Rick’s coach called him over and held up a big box of cleats.  “Here’s some unclaimed shoes students left in their lockers at the end of the school year. Find your size if you can.” Rick found some that fit and the cleats made all the difference.  Even the “crunching” sound they made on the track sent shivers of confidence and purpose up Rick’s spine.  Rick discovered it’s much easier to strive for the goal when your footing is secure.

Many athletes dream of standing atop a podium during an awards ceremony with gold medals around their necks.  For most, it takes talent, hard work, plus money to get there.  But there is an ornament even more valuable than a gold medal. Proverbs 3:21-23 reveals:

“My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.  Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”

Sound judgment and discernment are medals that become ours when we walk in wisdom.  Money can take us places, for sure, but it can only take us so far. It provides but a measure of security. Wisdom is the footwear each of us needs to run the race God has set before us.  Wisdom will help us make the important trek from this world into eternity.

When we walk in His wisdom – in God’s cleats – He promises us solid footing.  He does not promise a road that is always flat, or a route that is easy to run, but He promises us solid footing no matter the terrain.  Wisdom – proper respect for the Lord and His ways – affords us ultimate security. Eternal security.  Money can’t do that.

Rick went on to compete successfully in high school, and on his college cross-country team. He also went on to gain godly wisdom. I’m so thankful for the friends and coaches that ensured Rick had what he needed to run his best.

God ensures – through the Bible, His followers, and His Spirit within us – that we each have what we need to run our best as well.  He equips us to follow hard after Him. No money is necessary to be well-heeled in God’s kingdom. Whether we’re wearing nursing shoes, work boots, high heels, hand-me-downs, or flip-flops, we can walk securely by walking wisely.

Dear Lord, grant me wisdom and sure footing as I follow after You. I trust You to equip me with all I need. Whatever my path, I believe Your principals can keep me from slipping. You lead, I’ll follow. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Persecution of Christians
Author: myblog | Jan 26, 2010

The persecution of Christians in the U.K. and the United States is heating up like never before. Street preachers are being told it is against the law to hand out tracts and read the Bible in public, school officials are threatened with prison for praying over a meal and prison officials even cut Bible verses out of the mail sent to prisoners.

While the church is asleep, Christian persecution is exploding around the globe.  Even in the western world, freedom for Christians to practice and express their faith is being curtailed as never before.  Today even we were shocked when we read about how two Christian hotel owners in the U.K. are being charged with a crime for witnessing to some Muslim guests.

Will A New Law Essentially Outlaw Evangelical Christianity And Roman Catholicism In The U.K.?

Did that headline get your attention?  It should.  A new law is dangerously close to becoming law in the U.K. that would essentially outlaw evangelical Christianity and Roman Catholicism.  Not that ”The Equality Bill” specifically designates those faiths as illegal in the legislation itself.  Rather, the bill outlaws specific beliefs and practices that are fundamental to both evangelical Christianity and Roman Catholicism.  In fact, experts are saying that “The Equality Bill” would create a volcanic eruption of litigation in U.K. courts and would ultimately force those who wish to continue to practice anything that even looks like traditional Christianity to go underground.

So just what is the Equality Bill?  Click on the above link to read the article

Christians persecuted

The Bible predicts that most of the world will reject it’s teachings about God, and his son Jesus, and that in the Last Days, Christians will be persecuted. Living in the United States, it’s hard to imagine Christians facing wide spread persecution, however if the United States falls to a world leader, backed by a foreign god, this persecution could suddenly happen overnight.

(In many other countries of the world, Christians already face widespread persecution.)

How to Survive the Last Days

Earthquakes. Severe Weather. UFOs. Nuclear Attack on USA. The Rise of the Anti-Christ…
By Mark Lawrence, SecretsofSurvival.com

Without a doubt, we live in some unsettling times. Many people are starting to realize that our days on Earth may truly be numbered.

At least if you live in the United States, as a nuclear attack on the United States appears to be prophecied in multiple books of the Bible.

Looking at Bible prophecy, it appears to be the first major event to occur, before most of the world even realizes that we are really in the ‘last days’. This event takes everyone by surprise.

The Anti-Christ then comes to power. Considering the current state of world affairs, my guess is that the Anti-Christ will turn out to be a Muslim.

With the rise of Radical Islam, and the fact that Bin Laden and other terrorists would like to kill millions of Americans with nuclear weapons, makes this an event that appears as though it really could occur on our watch.

Not only that, but the President of Iran — a Shiite Muslim who has stated in speeches that Islam will destroy the West — has his own unique role to play in this radicalized rise of Islam.

Are We in The End of Days? Let’s Look at the Evidence

False Religion – The ‘New Age’ movement has grown to encompass hundreds of millions of followers around the world. What was once considered the occult, has now gone mainstream in a very big way. New Agers tell us that God is everywhere, God is love, and we are all one brotherhood of different religions, and to embrace this, and that the future is full of prosperity and pleasure.

However, we turn on the news and every day we are faced with very real, very severe threats from nuclear terrorists, severe weather unlike any in recorded history, and a planet that is changing very quickly for the worse (and we’re told will never be the same).  Read the full article

Escape the Mark of the Beast

After Mystery Babylon the Great falls, the people left alive are told that they must have a mark placed on their right hand and forehead in order to buy or sell commerce, etc. and live under the new ruler. Those who refuse the mark will more than likely be killed or placed in captivity, or take to the mountains, similiar to the characters in the movie Red Dawn, and survive off the land.

Revelation 14:9 – “If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he will also drink the wine of God’s wrath… There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or anyone who receives the mark of his name. Here is the endurance of the saints, who keep the commandments of God and the faith in Jesus.”
